As a Computer Science student at California State University, Long Beach (CSULB), she is blazing a trail in technology with a strong sense of purpose and a passion for fostering inclusivity. Set to graduate in 2026, Cristina has already made remarkable strides, thanks to her participation with Break Through Tech’s AI Program in Los Angeles.

Discovering Break Through Tech Cristina first learned about Break Through Tech through her involvement with the Women in Computing club at CSULB. Nhu Nguyen, a former club president and member of the 2023-2024 Break Through Tech cohort, encouraged her to apply. “Nhu had such a great experience in the program and recommended it to me,” Cristina recalls. Inspired by the program’s mission to support women and underserved groups in technology, she decided to take the leap.

A Welcoming Space in Tech Initially pursuing a degree in accounting, Cristina shifted to computer science and quickly noticed the gender imbalance in her lectures. “I found it intimidating that there were so few women,” she says. Determined to find a supportive environment, Cristina joined Women in Computing and, later, Break Through Tech.

“I wanted to get involved in a community that would inspire and encourage me, and Break Through Tech has truly cultivated that environment.”

Shaping a Career in AI Participating in Break Through Tech has solidified Cristina’s aspirations to pursue a career in software engineering or machine learning/AI. “Being surrounded by so many talented, welcoming, and motivated individuals has encouraged me to be more confident in my skillset and my ability to learn and adapt,” she says. Completing the Machine Learning Foundations course alongside her peers was a significant milestone, leaving her feeling empowered to apply her knowledge in real-world scenarios.

Memorable Moments One of Cristina’s most cherished memories from the program was connecting with fellow students during lunch breaks at the in-person Machine Learning Foundations course sessions. “It was so fun to learn about everyone’s achievements and progress while getting to know others with similar interests,” she shares.

For students considering Break Through Tech, Cristina offers this advice: “Apply! Just make an attempt and get involved. I was nervous about submitting my application, fearing I wasn’t qualified enough, but I’ve accomplished so much and met so many amazing people.” She emphasizes a lesson shared by a Break Through Tech fellow: “Do not decide for yourself what you are not qualified for.”

Inspiration and Hobbies Cristina credits her mother as her inspiration to pursue a career in tech. “As a child, when I was introduced to technology and the internet, it was amazing to see how much knowledge I had at my fingertips,” she explains. Despite initial doubts, her mother encouraged her to follow her passion, which ultimately led her to computer science.

Outside of her studies, Cristina enjoys creating—whether it’s sewing her own clothes, knitting, crocheting, or exploring ceramics. Her creative pursuits provide a balance to her tech-focused life.

A Message of Gratitude and Growth Cristina’s favorite book, The Midnight Library by Matt Haig, reflects her outlook on life. The story’s themes of overcoming regret and appreciating opportunities resonate deeply with her. As she continues her journey, Cristina remains grateful for the support and inspiration she’s found through Break Through Tech, and she’s determined to make a lasting impact in the world of technology.
