Jenny Sy had already heard of the Studio at Cornell Tech when she submitted a project to Break Through Tech’s AI Studio last year. The Data Science Manager at the Hive, USA for UNHCR — the UN Refugee Agency — had enjoyed working with Master’s students at Cornell, but wasn’t sure what to expect with undergraduates from schools across the greater NYC area.

Following a successful all-virtual Sprinternship™ in 2021, the financial services firm PEAK6 brought its 2022 Break Through Tech Chicago Sprinterns™ in house. The result? A rewarding tech immersion that combined programming experience and career preparation with one unusual ingredient.

The most diverse tech pipeline in the world won’t ultimately make a difference if the women who make it into tech are held back by organizational cultures that, consciously or not, incentivize their silence. While it may be true that women have the tendency to want and expect their work to speak for itself, the truth is that being vocal at work has always been a minefield for women.

As the weather warms up, many of our students are looking towards a major milestone in their career: their first summer internship. It’s a turning point for a college student, as that experience can give them the confidence they’re on the right career path and get them in an employer’s pipeline for future opportunities, or even full time employment. But for a lot of our students, summer internships seem impossible to land — that is, until they have a Sprinternship™ on their resume.

Brenda Henriquez, a brand-new computer science graduate as of May, says she always had George Mason University on her radar. Coming into a STEM area felt like a natural fit for her and she was excited to join the Break Through Tech DC at George Mason initiative as a peer leader.

At Break Through Tech Chicago, we often point out that computer science pairs well with almost any academic focus. UIC student Danielle Cartagenes found that magic pairing with linguistics, an area of study offered by UIC's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
